GUASTI COSE CLASSIC Original Airdate: November 26, 2007 Episode #233, "Thanks For the Memories" "I haven't had a real Thanksgiving in years," Eric Hanley said, taking a sip from the bottle of Jack Daniels resting on the kitchen counter. "This should be fun." "That is for cooking," Leslie Hanley said. She snatched the bottle away from Eric and placed it back on the counter. "Vince! Akilah! Get back in here so you can help!" Vince and Akilah reluctantly filed into the kitchen. Instead of being excited by the aroma of turkey and dressing, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and sweet potato pie, they were instead sickened by the idea of being forced to help cook in the hot kitchen. Yet again. "I enjoyed not being at home for the past two years," Vince muttered. "I heard that, boy," Leslie said, swatting Vince in the back of the head. "Get over there and start making that cranberry sauce." "I think Vince can handle that just fine," Akilah said. "Grate some cheese," Leslie said through clenched teeth. She meant business. "Okay," Vince and Akilah said in unison, hurrying to their duties. "Your mom's a real slave driver," Eric whispered to Vince. "Why are you talking me?" Vince demanded. "Oh, I'm sorry...that wasn't a black joke." "Huh? I wasn't talking about...I wasn't talking about that," Vince hissed. "I was talking about you using every moment you can to see me naked." "What?!" Akilah cried, turning her head and exposing herself as an eavesdropper on the conversation. "I always knew you were gay." "I'm not gay," Vince snapped. "Whatever," Akilah said. "I'll bet you take it up the butt for Blake on the regular." "Stop being a bitch, Akilah." "Vince, don't call your sister a bitch," Leslie said angrily. "She called me gay!" Vince cried. Leslie shrugged, smiling. "Well, you do listen to Madonna." "I hate all of you," Vince groused, returning to the can of cranberry sauce sitting on the island in the kitchen. "So, it looks like the entire family's gonna be here," Eric said. "Except for those unsavory ones we want to forget. Like the ones in prison. Or, you know, the ones being held hostage in London." Vince shook his head. "I hate Matt. A lot. But his mom is a nutcase."
"True dat," Eric said, attempting to knock fists with Vince. "Okay...I'll admit, that was kind of a black joke."

A bit more premature than I expected for the second Guasti Cose classic, but apparently people need to know who Tyler Rogers is, so here's an episode that provides a bit of a backstory on him. Perhaps it's a detriment to myself as a writer, but the reason I love a show like Lost is that it can introduce a minor character early on, and have them come into the forefront later if they are integral to the story you're writing. I think anyone who's read my writing knows I care deeply for my characters and I love writing to challenge my characters and take them in places they haven't been before. But I raised on sci-fi, mysteries, noir... I'm a huge fan of plot. And at the end of the day, I will always be devoted to creating a twisty, exciting plot as much as characters. But I know the soap genre very well, and the audience needs to know more about characters in order to follow a story along, so that's definitely something I'll be working on. GC has been a featured site in the past, it's gotten accolades, I know it's not a mess but when things happen that get out of my control, I take them hard. I guess as a writer you want things to be perfect, and they are in your head, but they aren't perceived that way to others. But... does criticism make you falter? Or does it give you the strength to continue? I definitely know I'm the latter. Let's get on to this episode, which is from 2007 when GC made its official return from hiatus with a new direction for its stories. Everything happening in the series right now is based on the foundations laid in these late 2007 episodes, so it's actually interesting to revisit this episode in particular and see how things are now playing out. |
