Episode #233, "Thanks For the Memories" ATLANTIC CITY Melissa stepped outside, clutching her jacket collar. She found Tyler sitting on a fence near the entrance, twiddling with his cell phone. She walked toward him and sat down. "Hey," Melissa said softly. "Hey," Tyler replied. "I'm sorry about all of that in there," Melissa continued. "About all of this." "A lot to take in," Tyler said. "But for what it's worth...I believe you." "Really?" "My father has never told me the truth about my mother," Tyler said. "For years I was starting to think I was adopted or something. Now it all makes sense." "I'm glad," Melissa said. "Now, I've been thinking...I don't want to uproot you and start making changes in your life. I figure, I could do some visiting to Atlantic City, maybe you could visit Marquette Cove...so we could get to know one another properly." Tyler nodded. "That sounds nice." "You have a brother!" Melissa said, excitedly. "Hunter. His name is Hunter. And I'm married, to a wonderful man named Robert. And he has a son, his name is Alec. Three boys. I have three boys now...wow. I must sound crazy." Tyler laughed. "It's cool. I'm excited too. I never thought that " "Mrs. Bale." Dr. Crawford, the lab technician, stepped outside and interrupted Tyler. "I have the test results." Hugh followed Dr. Crawford outside, eager to hear what the doctor had to say. Tyler clutched Melissa's hand as they rose to their feet. "Good," Melissa said softly. "I'm ready." Dr. Crawford gripped the folder in his hand. "According to these test results, I'm sorry to say, but Tyler is not your son." |
This was also a very fun scene to write, because ever since I'd introduced Tyler I knew that I was going to have the eventual heartbreaking scene where Melissa discovers that he isn't her son. She had been lost for most of her adult life, but she'd finally gotten a happy ending. A new husband, a new son... but when she discovered Tyler might be her son, it threw her into a tailspin. In part because her own daughter Erin had been murdered three years earlier in the series, and in part because she'd also lost a child to a miscarriage caused by Valerie Holden. This heartbreaking news was the beginning of her life tailspinning out of control. And when she finally discovered that her actual lost child was Alexis Lopez... well, she died before she was able to be reunited with her. |
