"We’re late," Julia whispers. "Who cares?" Vince demands. "I hope they throw the book at him." "Vince." "Look, I’m sorry, Julia, but I don’t think you, one, need to be with someone who’s preying on high school girls, and two, someone who’s into drugs like him. What is it with you women and the bad boys? I mean, seriously." Julia laughs. "Bad boys? This coming from you? You wrote the definition." "Whatever." Julia and Vince turn their attention back to the Judge, who announces that Morris will be put on probation and receive two hundred hours of community service for his offense. "Wait, that’s it?" Vince asks. Julia frowns. "I guess so."
"Man. I guess we were late."
They sit down at a table outside the Emerald Café. "Should you be getting back?" Jack asks. Darren shakes his head. "Nah. I’m the only one in the office today. I was just arranging files, getting caught up with stuff since the move." "Move?" "A new condo. It’s...it’s nice." "Cool." Darren frowns, shifting gears. "What are you doing here, Jack?" "I just moved to Chicago a while back, and I thought I’d look you up again," Jack insists. "Really? Last time I remembered, you wanted nothing to do with me." "Darren..." "I’m sorry," Darren says. "It’s just that...it hurt, Jack. I’ve only recently started to get over you. But I understand it was my fault. I understand which part I played." "I really did care about you. I still do." "Is that why you’re here?" Jack doesn’t respond, and Darren sighs. "I know you still care about me," Darren says. "I just wish I’d been able to come to terms with what I...who I am. You’d been out for years, Jack. I was so afraid of that." Jack stands and walks away, trying to contain his emotions. "Not anymore, you’re not," Jack says. "Huh?" "I only live an hour away from here on the train, Darren. We get the tabloids there too." It takes Darren a moment to realize what Jack is referring to. "The party." "The kiss." "It just –" "Happened. Yeah. With your young, nubile boyfriend." "That’s not how it happened, Jack." "What is he, twelve?" "Jack." Jack wipes a tear away from his eyes before it can trickle down his cheek. "Jack...is something else wrong?" Darren demands. "No. Nothing’s wrong," Jack insists. "We should...we should get going."
"Yeah," Darren agrees, nodding. "Sure."
Kelli Anderson drops to her knees in the Women’s Restroom, attempting to revive Jessica Reyes. After a few moments, Jessica opens her eyes. "Jessica!" Kelli cries. "You need to see a nure." Jessica moans and sits up on the floor. "No, I’m fine. I just have a bug or something," Jessica insists. "Jess, I’m serious," Kelli says. "I’m going to get the – shit." "I don’t need a – what?" Kelli sighs. "The nurse is out this week. I mean, we don’t have one yet. We were talking about it in Student Council this morning." "Good," Jessica snaps. "Because I don’t need a –" "Stop arguing with me!" Kelli shouts. "Dammit, you are really stubborn." "I’m fine. Really." Jessica tries to stand, but she stumbles. Jessica grabs the edge of the sink and Kelli takes her arm, helping her. "I’m taking you to the hospital," Kelli insists. "Alright...Alright. If it will get you to leave me alone, I’ll go."
Kelli forces a smile. "Let’s go."
The phone rings a few times before Robert’s voicemail picks up. "Robert? I thought we both took the day off work in order to spend some time together. Call me back when you get this." Melissa hangs up the phone and angrily tosses it onto the other end of the couch. She leans back and lets out a loud sigh, running her fingers through her hair. As she closes her eyes in an attempt to drift off into her thoughts, her phone rings. She reaches across the couch and picks up the phone. "Robert? Hello?" There is no response. "Hello?" This time, Melissa hears a response of heavy breathing. This disturbs her. "Who is this?" Melissa demands. "Who is this?! Answer me!" The other end goes dead. Melissa angrily throws her phone again, this time wondering if Valerie had moved up to calling her and pretending to be Michael Myers at this point. Melissa sighs again, standing up to approach the stairs. As she does, she notices a shadow moving past the window. With the blinds closed, she can only see a figure looming outside. "Oh God," Melissa gasps. "Is someone outside my..." Melissa grabs a poker from the fireplace and rushes to the front door. She hears a rustling outside and pulls open the door, waving the poker in the air. She ends up startling a man standing outside, carrying a bundle of envelopes. "Who are you?!" Melissa demands, shouting at the top of her lungs. "And why are you dressed like a mailman?!" She catches herself after her last comment, realizing what she has just said. "Oh...oh my...I’m sorry." "I...I’m a sub for your regular mailman," the young mailman holding the envelopes stutters. "He has pneumonia...I’m so sorry that it’s...so late in the...I can get you your mail earlier if you’re like, I was just confused about where to go. I’m sorry." Melissa takes a deep breath and frowns, attempting to save face. "Well, good. And don’t let this happen again."
Melissa holds out her hand and the young mailman hands her a couple of envelopes. Melissa steps back inside and slams the door shut. Almost immediately, she drops the envelopes and the poker and leans against the door, breathing heavily and trying to compose herself.
He chuckles, removing his cell phone from his pocket and staring at his recent calls. Melissa Maddock’s cell phone number is at the top of the list. His grin curls into an even more diabolical smile as he dials the number again, preparing to haunt her once more. executive producer |
