Emerald Park

Detective Joel Kincaid stood near the edge of the lake, where another body had been found. He turned to face Eric Winters, the medical examiner on the scene, so he could ask him more about the three victims found that night.

"How's it look?" Joel asked.

"Looks like they were all killed the same way," Eric replied. "By mauling."

"Damn," Joel said, staring at the teenage girl on the ground. "Whatever did this to her tore her open and ate her insides. It's disgusting. Are we thinking a wild animal?"

"That's what we thought for the first few cases that the chief sent you," Eric said. "But this one suggests something a little different."

"Like what?"

"A piece of torn clothing here that doesn't belong to any of the victims, and a set of footprints," Eric said. "Most of them were washed away by the rain from last night, but there's still a partial footprint intact."

"I want you to try and find a match for those at the lab," Joel said. "Because if someone's behind this, then that bastard needs to be put away for a long time."

As Joel thought about the crime, his mind raced back to thoughts of his brother, Duncan, and how he'd been sent to jail for raping and murdering Joel's first wife, Kelly Crane. He'd called Duncan a monster and couldn't believe what he had done to someone he claimed to have been in a relationship with.

But Joel could never believe that Kelly had ever loved Duncan more than him. He couldn't accept that…but that was in the past now. Even though Duncan was now in Marquette Cove attempting to infiltrate Joel's life, he wasn't going to let him.

"I'll bury myself in my work if I have to," Joel muttered, as Eric walked away. "I won't let Duncan run my life."

"After everything I've done for you, you've come to me to once again leave my organization," Quentin Blood said, taking a seat behind his desk. "You want to turn your back on me again, don't you?"

"It's not that, it's just…I can't do this," Chris Server said, looking nervous while seated across from Quentin. "I'm trying to rebuild my life."

"I understand," Quentin replied. "Which is why I'm going to give you two options."

"And what are those options?"

"The first is that you do exactly what I ask of you today," Quentin answered.

Chris took a deep breath. "And the second?"

Quentin smiled. "I kill you."

"What?" Chris demanded, nearly choking. "You can't kill me!"

"And why not? It's not as if anyone would miss you," Quentin said. "Not even your parents seem to care about you having gone to jail and back."

"But…"

"Just accept the first option, and I'll remove death from the table."

Chris hesitated for a moment, until he stared into Quentin's eyes and saw how cold and empty they were. He knew Quentin wasn't joking.

"Fine. Door number one."

"Good," Quentin replied. "Now, all you have to do is one simple task for me, and then everything will be perfect."

"What's the task?"

"I want you to kill Blake Thomas," Quentin said.

Marquette Cove Memorial Hospital

"Are you okay?" Aaron Maddock asked his cousin, Melissa.

"I'm…I'm fine," Melissa replied, rising to her feet. "What happened while I was under hypnosis?"

"You were talking about Erin and losing your son," Aaron replied. "That's all we got so far."

Melissa sighed. "I was hoping there'd be more."

"Like what?" Aaron asked cautiously. "Is there something you're not telling me?"

"No," Melissa said. "I'm just…a little confused, that's all. I'm telling you Aaron, it's as if there's something in my mind trying to tell me something, but I can't figure out what it is."

"You just need some rest, that's all," Aaron said, reaching for a tablet on his desk.

He scribbled a few notes onto it and ripped a sheet from the tablet, handing it off to his cousin.

"Here's a subscription for something that should help you sleep," Aaron said softly.

Melissa frowned. "What is it?"

"Clozapine," Aaron replied. "Just a mild sleeping pill, that's all."

"Thank you, Aaron," Melissa said, taking the sheet. "I'll call you for another appointment, okay?"

Aaron nodded. "Of course."

As Melissa gathered her things and left the office, Aaron sighed and took a deep breath, leaning back in his chair. As he did so, he gripped the pen he was holding and tried ignoring what he had just prescribed to his sister. Clozapine was a drug used in treating severely ill schizophrenic patients — it certainly wasn't a sleeping pill.

"I'm sorry, Melissa," Aaron said. "But if Hugh finds out that you're remembering pieces of your past…he just might kill us both."

Bale & Maddock Law Offices

"I'm doing this to save someone's life," Alec Bale said, staring at his cousin, Darren Reynolds.

"Whose?" Darren demanded.

"Your sister's."

"I wasn't aware my sister needed you to save her life," Darren snapped.

"Well, you've been gone for a while, you've missed a lot," Alec said. "Our entire family is in trouble, and I'm trying to do something about it."

"Still doesn't explain why you're breaking into your father's office and looking at confidential files."

"My dad is too busy ruining his marriage to my mother to do anything about this," Alec continued. "And my mother, well…she's too busy screwing Michael Hanley to care."

"Care about what?" Darren asked. "The fact that their son has become a jaded teenager with a chip on his shoulder? What happened to you, Alec?"

"Shove it, newbie," Alec said. "I'm trying to give you some advice on how to keep your sister away from Ricard Branch."

"And why should I do that?"

"She's gay, for one. Dating guys should be against the rules."

"My sister is bisexual, Alec," Darren corrected him. "Not that it's any of your business what Sara's sexuality is."

"Alright, then is it my business whether or not my cousin dates a drug dealer?" Alec demanded.

"Excuse me?"

"That's right," Alec said. "Ricard Branch, the prince in love with Sara, is a lowlife drug dealer."

Duncan Kincaid jogged out of the elevator as it reached the second floor of the hospital. He wiped beads of sweat away from his forehead and turned off his iPod as he approached the desk where his roommate, Kimberly Black, was working.

"Hey Kim," Duncan said.

"Duncan, what are you doing here?" Kimberly asked, setting down a folder she had in her hands.

"I was out for a run," Duncan replied. "I thought I'd visit my roommate and see how she's doing."

"Having plenty of fun being the only nurse confined to desk duty," Kimberly muttered. "It might have something to do with that guy I gave the wrong medicine the other week."

Duncan grimaced. "Oh…I heard about that."

"You'd think the guy would know he wasn't supposed to be getting a shot," Kimberly said.

"He was in a coma, Kimberly."

"Irregardless," Kimberly said.

Rather than correct her grammar, Duncan reached out and touched Kimberly's hand.

"I came to ask you something," Duncan said. "That's the real reason I stopped by."

Kimberly smiled. "Oh, really? What's the question, then?"

"How would you like to go on a date?"

"With who?"

"With your brother," Duncan said.

Kimberly frowned. "Why would I do that?"

"I'm kidding," Duncan said.

"Well, it wasn't a very funny joke."

"I meant me."

"You? What about you?"

"Me," Duncan repeated.

"I know who you are, Duncan," Kimberly insisted.

"No, I'm asking you to go on a date with me," Duncan said, impatiently.

"Oh…"

Duncan raised an eyebrow. "So?"

"I'll think about it," Kimberly replied.

"Well, all right," Duncan said, reaching to turn his iPod on.

"Okay, I'll do it," Kimberly said quickly.

Duncan smirked. "Nice answer."

He turned around and jogged back toward the elevator as it was opening, and headed back down to the first floor.

Bale & Maddock Law Offices

"A what? My sister wouldn't date a drug dealer," Darren said. "So it appears you've also become a liar while I've been gone."

"I'm not lying, cousin," Alec insisted.

"Don't patronize me, Alec. I'm not one of your friends from high school."

"You don't believe me? Then take a look at this file," Alec said, sliding the folder across the table. "Your uncle has defended Ric in quite a few cases."

Darren hesitated for a moment, and then he stepped forward to read the contents of the folder. The first thing he noticed were the drug possession charges that Ric had against him. There were over four on the first page alone.

"I don't believe it," Darren said. "And this is the boy who came over for New Year's?"

"One and the same," Alec said.

"This is nuts," Darren cried. "Why would my sister be dating someone like this?"

Alec shrugged. "His records are sealed. You're sister is too naïve…I mean, she's too nice to believe the rumors about Ric that everyone else knows are real."

"I can't believe this," Darren said, turning the page and continuing to read. "What has my sister gotten herself into?"

"Nothing. Not if we can help it," Alec said. "But I'll need you to help me."

Darren frowned. "If it will keep this guy away from my sister, then you've got my full support."

Blood Home

Chris rolled his eyes. "You were joking that time."

"A little," Quentin said. "But anyway, I've wasted enough of your quite valuable time, I'm sure. I want you to do a favor for me, and then we can forget all about this problem."

"And what's the favor?"

"I want you to find someone for me," Quentin replied. "Someone who I believe is in Marquette Cove, or may have lived here at some point. For reasons I won't divulge, I am unable to find her, and I need an extra set of eyes and ears."

"Who do you want me to find?" Chris demanded.

"My daughter."

Chris remained silent for a moment.

"My daughter, whom I have never met, since her mother kept me away from the child before she was born," Quentin continued. "But I have reason to believe she is alive and well in Marquette Cove, or someplace near."

"You have a daughter?"

"Yes, I do," Quentin said. "And I want you to find her for me."
