Marquette Cove High School

Alexis Lopez

Alexis Lopez opened her locker and rummaged through its contents. She never could find anything in that damned thing. Alexis always meant to clean it out, but whenever a chance arose, she was too lazy to do so.

"You should really clean that thing."

Alexis turned around to find her best friend, Jessica Reyes, smiling at her.

"Thanks for the tip," Alexis mocked. "Where were you last night? I tried calling you, but your mom said you were out."

"Bookstore," Jessica responded. "You know me. Study Girl."

"No, I don't," Alexis said. "You're failing economics."

"Hence the study," Jessica said. "And speaking of, I won't be able to come over later."

Alexis laughed. "What, you're going to be studying again?"

Jessica nodded. "Yes."

"Well, I am too," Alexis said, closing her locker. "We can study together. I heard that Miss Watson is really going all-out on this next exam."

"You can't!" Jessica exclaimed.

Alexis narrowed her eyes at Jessica. Realizing her error, Jessica bit her lip and stared off down the hallway.

Classroom

Ryan Phillips scribbled a few notes into a few notes into his grade book, before closing the book and placing it on top of a pile of papers on his desk. When he glanced up, he saw a beautiful woman standing in the doorway.

Ryan smiled. "Sam."

Samantha Clark, the head of the science department at Marquette Cove High School, smiled back at him. "Hello, Ryan."

"I had fun last night," Ryan said, continuing to smile, only more devilishly this time.

"So did I," Samantha said, walking over to Ryan's desk. "We should do it again tonight."

"I'd love to," Ryan said, standing up to kiss Samantha. "But I can't."

Samantha frowned. "Why not?"

"I've got to finish all of these grades," Ryan replied. "Besides, I have an exam to finish writing by Friday."

"Oh, all right," Samantha said, pouting. "But when you finish that, you're all mine."

She grabbed Ryan by the collar of his shirt and pulled him closer.

Ryan laughed. "Of course."

Hallway

Michael Hanley walked through the hallway, checking his mail. As he neared his office, he heard someone call out his name. Michael stopped walking and turned around to see who was addressing him.

"Matthew," Michael said.

Matt Holden stared at Michael intently. It was clear to Michael that Matt wanted something.

"What do you want Matthew?" Michael demanded. "I'm rather busy."

"Vincent Moore," Matt said.

"What about him?"

"I want him dead."

Michael laughed at Matt and folded his arms. "Oh, you do?"

"Yes," Matt replied. "And you're going to help me."

Love is eternal. Life is forever.
Yet things shall always remain...guasti cose.

Hallway

"Stop being so melodramatic, Matthew," Michael said. "Let's go into my office."

"Fine," Matt said, following his uncle into his office.

"Have a seat," Michael said, closing the door.

Matt sat down in the chair across from Michael's desk.

"Now, explain this Vince thing to me," Michael said. "You want him...dead? I believe that was the word you used?"

"Okay, maybe I was exaggerating," Matt said. "But I do want to get rid of him."

"Well, so do I, but there's nothing to be done," Michael said.

"You're the Dean of Students, Uncle Michael!" Matt cried. "Can't you do something? Like expel him?"

"For what?"

"Drugs."

"He doesn't do them."

"Cheating on test?"

"He doesn't cheat."

"Can you stop being his goddamn groupie?"

"Matthew, while I may hate the Moores, I have no desire at the current time to expend my energy on him. It would be pointless."

"But I should be captain of the basketball team, not him! He's a sophomore for God's sake."

"So that's what this is about? The basketball team?"

"What the hell else would it be about?"

"I don't have time for this," Michael said. "If you want to get rid of Vince, then do it yourself."

"Fine. Whatever," Matt groaned, storming out of the room.

Michael smiled and returned to his work.

Emerald Cemetery

"Antonio," the stranger responded. "And we really need to talk. Because you're not supposed to be able to see me."

"You wereyou were in my house," Vince sputtered. "I'm calling the police."

Vince reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone.

"I'm sorry, I can't let you do that," Antonio said, snatching the phone out of Vince's hands.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Disabling your phone with my mind."

"Give me my phone back before I...huh?"

"Yeah, what's the big deal?" Alec demanded.

Blake sneered. "I think you know why."

"I think I don't," Alec responded. "And seeing as how we don't share a brain"

"Your relationship with my brother," Blake answered. "Well, if you use the term 'relationship' loosely."

"What the hell are you talking about? Thomas was my best friend."

"Don't call him that," Blake snapped. "Don't you dare call him Thomas. His name was Michael to you."

"Blake, shut up," Alec said. "You have no idea what you're talking about."

Blake laughed. "Don't I? You were never there for him when he was in the hospital."

"And how would you know? Have we already forgotten how afraid you were to even visit your brother? I'm surprised you even knew what he was dying of."

"Shut up."

"What's the matter, can't take the truth?"

"Shut up!" Blake shouted.

Alec ignored Blake and continued to egg him on. When he finally reached a breaking point, Blake lunged at Alec and wrapped his hands around Alec's neck.

"Blake, stop!" Kelli cried, watching in shock.

Marquette Cove High School

"And why can't you come over, missy?" Alexis demanded, folding her arms.

"Because I'mpainting my room tonight?" Jessica offered.

Alexis laughed and unfolded her arms. She slung her purse over her shoulder and pushed a strand of unruly black hair out of her face.

"Fine. Don't tell me," Alexis said, smiling. "Go have your clandestine meetings with some guy I don't know about."

"You're assuming there's a guy?"

"There's always a guy."

"There might be a guy."

"Well, I hope there's still a guy at lunch," Alexis said, checking her watch. "I'll see you later."

Alexis waved goodbye to Jessica and hurried off to Miss Watson's classroom. When Jessica was sure that Alexis was gone, she turned and headed for the stairs that lead to the basement. Alec didn't have a class first period, so she was going to wait for him to show up at the stage crew workroom.

Maybe we should skip a few more periods, Jessica thought.

Emerald Cemetery

"I'm disabling your phone with my mind," Antonio repeated. "Try to keep up."

"And you'll be doing that how?" Vince asked, the expression on his face an equal mix of amusement and annoyance.

"I'm an angel," Antonio said.

Vince laughed. "An angel? Is your boss named Charlie?"

"No, an actual angel, dumb-ass," Antonio said, rolling his eyes. "The holy kind. With the wings?"

Vince climbed out of the car and glanced at Antonio's back.

"I don't see any wings," Vince said.

"Well, I'm not showing them now," Antonio remarked. "Do I look like I'm in need of ascending at the moment?"

"I don't think angels know how to swear."

"I'm an angel, not a saint," Antonio said. "But thatthat's not important. You have to stop Blake before he —"

Antonio's sentence was interrupted by the sound of Kelli crying out. Vince grabbed his phone back from Antonio and raced to his girlfriend's side.

Marquette Cove High School

"Are you absolutely sure?"

"I'm positive," Vanessa Watson said, responding through clenched teeth. "Why are we still even talking about this?"

"Because I wanted to be positive," Ryan said. "I'm with Samantha now, and if this kid is mine..."

"He's not, okay?" Vanessa snapped. "Just leave me alone."

"I want a test," Ryan said.

"No. He's not yours. I don't need a paternity test to tell me that."

"Then who's the father?" Ryan demanded. "Can you tell me that?"

"It's none of your business," Vanessa said. "You left me, Ryan. I don't owe you a thing."

"I'm not leaving until I —"

Ryan was interrupted when the door to Vanessa's classroom opened up, and Alexis appeared in the doorway. She smiled and waved at him, before entering the room and setting her books down on the desk.

"Hi Mr. Phillips," Alexis said. "Good morning, Miss Watson."

"Good morning, Alexis," Vanessa said, smiling.

"Good morning," Ryan grumbled, storming out of the room.

Alexis watched as Ryan left the room. She sighed softly and thought about how she might comfort him later. Ryan didn't know that Alexis was interested in him, but she would see to it that he knew soon enough.

"Alexis? You said you wanted to see me about something?" Vanessa asked.

"Huh?" Alexis snapped out of her daze and turned to her teacher. "Oh, yes. I wanted to ask you about the exam."

"Have a seat," Vanessa offered.

Men's Restroom

Matt dug into his jacket pocket and pulled out his cell phone. He quickly checked the bathroom stalls to make sure that he was alone, and then he dialed a number that he had scrawled onto a sheet of paper.

He waited patiently as the phone rang until someone answered it.

"Hello?"

"I need to speak with Ricard," Matt said. "I have a problem that needs to be taken care of...today."
