ST. THOMAS CHURCH

Sunlight gleams through the stained glass windows, illuminating Aaron Maddock as he walks into the church, arm-in-arm with Felicia Bale. They spot Father Grady greeting a couple and pass by him to find their seats. Felicia tensely grips the arm of a nearby pew.

"I don't know if I can do this," Felicia says.

"You'll be fine," Aaron says.

"You're so calm. How is it that you're so calm?"

"Years of dealing with other people's pain has somehow allowed me to neglect my own. Funerals don't phase me."

"I wish I had your constitution."

Aaron embraces Felicia in a strong hug. "You're holding up incredibly well, I think."

"I wouldn't blame you if you wanted me out of here," Felicia says. "My past with Melissa is pretty much common gossip fodder in town."

"Right now, we're about the only family she has. Kyle is gone, Erin is gone, her father is gone, and...well, actually, that's not true. She did find out something incredibly shocking on the night she —"

"Mom."

Felicia and Aaron see Alec approaching. He walks toward them, a deep sadness in his face. He's been crying.

"Alec, honey," Felicia says, quickly embracing him. "You didn't have to come. We would have understood if you..."

"I had to."

"Of course," Aaron says. "How are you doing?"

Alec forces an uncomfortable laugh. "You shouldn't be asking me that. I'm the one responsible for...for all of this."

"Let's not place any of the blame anywhere it doesn't belong," Aaron says. "Melissa's death was tragic and horrible. But what you were going through was also quite horrific."

"Yeah, shooting someone in cold blood is awfully horrific, isn't it? It's about as horrific as it gets."

The three recognize the voice immediately. The anger and resentment is undeniable. Felicia clutches Alec's arm as she faces down the one person she never thought would show up at the funeral today.

Robert Bale glares at the trio. "What's the matter? No one's gonna give me a hug?"

MARQUETTE COVE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Vincent Moore sits next to his unconscious father's bed and stares at his face. He can recognize him. He can remember everything about his father's life with him before he died...before he "died."

He also knows that his father, for some reason, wanted to leave his life behind. That he enlisted Michael Hanley's help in order to disappear from Marquette Cove with a new life, and start anew life New York. Without Vince.

But none of this adds up.

Sean Moore all of a sudden shows up in Marquette Cove with no memories of his former life? And a mind that tells him he's Elizabeth Hanley — Michael's dead wife?

Vince can't even begin to comprehend any of this. And he certainly doesn't understand why he cares for a man who for all intent and purposes abandoned his family six years ago.

"Vincent."

Vince turns around to find Michael in the doorway.

"What do you want?"

"Your mother's looking for you."

"She knows where I am."

"If she knew, I don't think she'd be looking for you, now would you?" Michael says.

"What's happened to my Dad?" Vince says suddenly. "What did you do to him?"

This is not a conversation Michael is rushing to have with Vince. "Do something?"

"You did something!"

"Years ago, Vincent," Michael says. "I had nothing to do with your father showing up in Marquette Cove now. And I'm just as horrified as you are."

"But how did he get into the mansion? Why does he think he's your dead wife?"

"I don't know," Michael says.

It's the truth. At least, mostly. Michael doesn't know why Sean has Elizabeth's memories, but he certainly intends to find out.

"Then think. Think about what happened when he came to you and said he wanted to abandon us," Vince says. "Think back to six years —"

Leslie Hanley enters the room. She flinches at the sight of her husband in the hospital bed. He's been here for weeks, and still, nothing. No conclusive tests showing why he has false memories. No tests showing if he'll ever remember his own life...

"Vincent. We need to get to the funeral."

"I'm not going," Vince says. "I want to stay here with my Dad."

"He'll still be here when —"

"I'm not going!" Vince shouts.

Leslie purses her lips. Michael takes her hand and grips it gently. "I'll drive you to the church. Vince will be fine here."

"Yeah, I'll be fine," Vince says softly. He turns away from them, back to his father.

Leslie shakes her head and strides out of the room. "Fine."

Vince wipes a bead of sweat from his father's forehead.

"I just want to know what happened..."

OUTSIDE ST. THOMAS CHURCH

Joel Kincaid enters the church courtyard with his daughter, Julia Mitchell. He feels slightly uncomfortable dressed in a suit, even more so with his recent position as security guard at Fordham Bay University. But he's here to pay his respects.

"I tried calling your uncle," Joel says. "But apparently, his cell phone is no longer in service."

Julia shrugs. "I guess he changed the number."

"And he of course didn't bother to tell any of us."

Julia rolls her eyes. "Do we have to argue about Duncan right now, Dad?"

"No," Joel says. "You're right. There are far more serious things going on with our friends."

"I just wish I knew where my friend was," Julia says softly.

Joel wraps his arms around Julia. "The police will find Akilah. She's a strong girl, she won't let anything horrible happen to her if she can help."

But what if she can't? Julia doesn't have the strength to let the words escape from her lips, but without even speaking, her father reads her mind. Because he's thinking the same thing.

"Let's go ahead and get inside, okay?" Joel says.

As he and Julia move toward the entrance, a loud, shrill voice erupts from behind them —

"I hope we're not too late!"

They both spin around to find a group of almost five to seven women, dressed in appropriate funeral black but definitely giving off a trashy, Jersey air, approaching the church. One of the women, smacking a large wad of gum in her mouth, stops at Joel.

"Excuse me, we ain't too late are we?"

Joel, completely taken aback, stares at the woman dumbfounded. "Who are you?"

"The name's Sydney Melrose," the woman says, pushing back her fiery red hair as it blows in the wind. "We're old friends of Melissa's."

Joel and Julia exchange awkward, bemused glances.

"Who are these people?" Julia says, whispering to her father.

"I think they're Melissa's old co-workers," Joel says.

"You're damn right," Sydney says, smiling widely. "We're working girls, and we're here to see one of our favorite girls off into the great beyond."

CHURCH NAVE

Felicia instinctively moves to step in from of her son. "Robert, get out of here."

"I have a right to be here," Robert says, slurring his words and barely able to stand upright. He's drunk.

"Robert, you've been drinking," Felicia says. "Melissa wouldn't want this."

"What do you know? You and that sister of yours ruined our lives," Robert says. "You never cared about her. And now you want to protect the piece of shit that killed her? And on top of that, you're all letting him run around town making baseless accusations!"

Robert stares down his son, sending a chill rolling through Alec's body. His knees shake, he's as unable to stand as Robert is.

"You didn't care about her," Alec says softly.

Robert leans forward, speaking in a mock-parental voice. "What was that, Alec? Does the little boy want to speak up so all of the adults can hear you?"

"You stop it, Robert!" Felicia says, shouting loud enough to draw the attention of others in the church. And if her voice weren't enough to make her heard, the slap she delivers across Robert's face finishes the job. "Do you hear me? You stop it and you get the hell out of here!"

Robert, almost on the verges of tears, points an accusatory finger at all of them. "She was my wife! And you killed her! You all killed her, and now you want to cover it up!"

"Robert!"

Simon Holden hurries down the aisle with Michael behind him. Simon rests his hands on Robert's shoulders and tries to steer him toward the church exit.

"Simon, I'm fine," Robert says. "I just..."

"Let's get out of here, okay?" Simon says. "Why don't we go outside and let everyone calm down? And then we can come back inside once the funeral starts?"

"That sounds like a good idea," Aaron says, nodding. He turns to Felicia. "I'll help Simon deal with Robert."

"I don't need to be dealt with," Robert says. "The only one who should be dealt with here is the bastard that killed —"

"Mr. Bale." Two large men in suits appear behind Robert. They flank opposite sides and each take an arm, pushing Simon and Aaron away. "You'll need to come with us."

"Get off me!" Robert says, shouting. "I have a right to be here!"

The men drag Robert out of the church as everyone watches in astonishment. Michael hides the smirk on his face as he sees Robert dragged through the church vestibule, then turns back to his family.

"Don't worry, they'll take care of him," Michael says. "I thought you might need reinforcements."

Alec breaks away from the others. "I wish they'd kill him."

Alec's comments are brushed off by everyone else, as they continue to focus on Robert's ousting. Only Michael hears and understands the anger and hostility in the young man's voice. And it's a darkness that he recognizes, one he knows all too well.
