Leslie Moore took her daughter, Akilah's, hand as they stood above the grave of Leslie's son, Vincent Moore. He had just been laid to rest, and now Leslie was finally going to begin the mourning process. At first, she had been in so much disbelief that she was unable to fully go through the motions of grieving for her son.
But now that the funeral had finally occurred, Leslie had some type of peace. Her son was in heaven now where he belonged, and he'd be watching over his family, much like his father had to be doing.
"It's going to be okay, mom," Akilah said. "We're going to get through all of this together. We have our friends to help us."
Next to them were members of the Hanley family in Michael, Simon, Valerie, and Matt. Also with them were Alec and Robert Bale, and Julia Mitchell. Regardless of everyone's personal feelings toward Vince, they were all there to mourn him, and Akilah was grateful for that.
"Thank you all for coming," Leslie said. "It truly means a lot to me and my daughter."
As Leslie spoke, someone else began to approach the grave site. She looked up and saw that it was Jessica Reye, her son's ex-girlfriend. Not the girlfriend who had been buried days earlier, but Vince's first and last girlfriend.
"She's got some nerve showing up here," Akilah muttered, stepping forward. "What the hell are you doing here, Jessica?"
"I came to pay my respects," Jessica said softly.
"Like hell you did," Akilah snapped.
"Akilah, don't," Leslie said.
"No, she shouldn't be here!" Akilah insisted. "You killed my brother, Jessica! You killed him because he tried to stop you from ruining Alec's life, and I tried to stop you from destroying Tim's. You ruined both of our lives!"
"Akilah, you are being demented as usual," Jessica said. "Mrs. Moore, I think you need to reign your daughter in. Get her back on her meds."
"You bitch," Akilah growled, lunging at Jessica and wrapping her arms around her neck to choke her. "I'll kill you before I let you step foot on my brother's grave!"
As Akilah began choking Jessica, Alec rushed to stop Akilah from killing her. He pulled Akilah away and held his hand out to keep Jessica back.
"Stop it, you two!" Alec cried. "You're going to kill each other!"
"I'm going to —"
"Stop!" Julia Mitchell cried, stepping forward.
Everyone turned to face her, as she stepped onto Vince's grave and glanced at his tombstone in fear.
"There's more here than anyone else sees!" Julia cried. "He's not the only one!"
As everyone continued arguing and listening to Julia's predictions, a worm crawled around in Vincent Moore's grave. It had somehow slipped in as his body was buried, and now it was crawling across Vince's dead skin. The worm was used to the coldness, living in the dirt, but for some strange reason it felt warm inside the coffin.
Before the worm knew it, Vince's arm began to twitch. It shot out, causing the worm to fly forward. Vince opened his eyes and gasped for air, finding himself surrounded in darkness. He had no idea where he was, the only thing he knew was that he had been trapped.
"Oh my God," Vince cried.
He started clawing at the cover of his coffin, still unaware what he was grabbing at. As he did, he tore the coffin's fabric and scratched his fingernails against the wood.
"Someone help me!" Vince screamed at the top of his lungs. "God, someone please help me! Don't let me die!"
"Vince, come on," Julia said.
"No," Vince said. "Maybe I deserve this."
"What are you talking about?" Julia demanded.
"Maybe I deserve to die, Julia," Vince said. "I've done a lot of horrible things this past year. To Jessica and Alec…to a lot of people. Maybe this is me paying for my sins."
"Vince, don't talk like that!" Julia cried. "You're my best friend's brother! She would kill me if I left you in here to die, and I know it would kill her if you died!"
"Julia, leave!" Vince shouted, touching her shoulder and sending her sliding down the church aisle and out of the entrance.
Julia screamed as she landed on the grass outside, while Vince laid on the ground and allowed the wreckage from the church to cave in on him. Julia tried climbing to her feet so she could rush back inside, but Alec grabbed her and pulled her back.
"Julia! Blake! Alec!" Vince cried, continuing to hope someone could hear him. "Get me out of here, please! Don't let me die in here! I'm still alive!"
Blake Thomas kneeled over Kelli Anderson's grave, resting his palm on her tombstone. Tears rolled down his eyes as he tried to speak a quiet prayer for her, remembering how much he had cared about her. He couldn't believe that one of his few friends was dead, and that she had only been one in a recent cycle of deaths in Marquette Cove.
Blake had lost Kelli, while others had lost Vince. Detective Joel Kincaid and his brother, Duncan, were dead too. Even Melissa Maddock and the new receptionist at their high school was dead as well. Blake couldn't believe that God was being so cruel, especially since Blake had now lost everyone close to him.
Except for Chris Server, his boyfriend, but Blake might as well have lost him. It was Chris's secrets that led to Kelli's death in the first place, and so Blake had cut Chris out of his life completely. He still loved Chris, which had prevented him from going to the police, but Blake couldn't take being with him anymore…not after he had harmed Kelli.
Not after he'd killed her.
"I'm so sorry," Blake said. "I'll pray for you every single day, Kelli. I promise…I owe you that much."
As Blake remained close to the ground, he paused when he heard what sounded like someone screaming out to him. Blake felt a chill run down his spine and he rose to his feet. He needed to get out the cemetery, he had spent enough time there already.
"Blake!" Kelli Anderson screamed, banging on the cover of her coffin as she could hear him praying above her. "Blake, I'm not dead! You have to save me!"
Kelli continued screaming for Blake to help her, but he didn't. Eventually, she ran out of air to scream with and began to feel faint. She was still mumbling Blake's name as she closed her eyes and drifted off into unconsciousness.
"Oh my God," Vince gasped. "Someone let me out of here!"
As Vince felt his skin tearing as he ripped at the coffin's cover, he ignored the pain and was thankful he couldn't see the blood on his fingers. Eventually, he found that he was running out of air. Vince laid back in the coffin and tried to calm his breathing.
"What the hell is happening to me?" Vince demanded.
"I'm sorry," Simon said, as a nurse pulled Vince's white sheet over his face. "I did all I could…but I wasn't able to save him."
"No!" Leslie cried. "No! Not my son, Simon! Not my son!"
Leslie nearly collapsed again, but Simon held her balance and Michael reached out to help her. Akilah stepped in to push Michael away from her mother.
"Stay away from her," Akilah said. "You've hurt our family enough."
"Akilah, stop," Leslie said. "Michael was only trying to help…like he did with Vince. I can't believe he's…no, I can't believe he's gone!"
Akilah walked her mother into the room to say goodbye to Vince. Michael remained in the doorway and grimaced at Simon.
"They're going to be okay," Michael said softly. "I'll see to it."
Memories suddenly came back to Vince, and he realized that he hadn't been dead while in his hospital bed. He had been able to hear and see everything occurring around him, he was merely unable to move.
"This can't be happening," Vince said.
Just then, a sharp object shoved its way through the lid of the coffin. Vince cried out reached out to touch the object, feeling how cold it was. If Vince wasn't mistaken, it appeared to be an icesicle.
Before he had a chance to react, Vince felt the coffin shaking violently as more icesicles pierced the coffin. Vince screamed as the coffin began to fall through some type of hole, and he held onto the icesicles for dear life. He had no idea where he would find himself.
THE HIGHWIND RESORT
Kelli opened her eyes and immediately noticed that she was no longer in a coffin. She saw that she was now resting in a limousine, and wearing a rather expensive black dress. Her hair had also been altered, and she was wearing make-up and jewelry. She turned to her right in shock and found an unconscious Vince lying next to her.
"Oh my God!" Kelli cried, nearly collapsing. "Vince! You're here with me!"
"Huh?" Vince groaned, slowly coming to. "Somebody…somebody help me..."
"Vince, wake up," Kelli said, slapping his face gently.
Vince opened his eyes and screamed when he found Kelli resting over him. He jumped to the other side of the limousine and huddled in fear.
"Vince, what's wrong?" Kelli demanded.
"I'm dead!" Vince cried. "Why are you here? Where are the icesicles?"
"Vince, what are you talking about?"
"There's…there's something odd going on here," Vince said. "I was buried alive!"
"So was I," Kelli said, nodding. "I think we were both —"
Kelli was interrupted when the door to the limousine opened, revealing a man dressed in all white smiling at them. He gestured for Vince and Kelli to exit the limousine. Reluctantly, they both exited the vehicle and found that they were standing in a driveway that was covered with snow.
In fact, they were surrounded by snow and picturesque mountains. It was an immediate clue that they were no longer in Marquette Cove.
"I don't think we're in Marquette Cove anymore, Kelli," Vince muttered.
"What am I, your dog?" Kelli demanded. "I can see that."
"Welcome," the man dressed in white said. "My name is Rory Kahn. I'll be the director of proceedings during your stay here at the Highwind Resort."
"The Highwind what?" Vince demanded. "Where are we? We were both buried alive…are we dead?"
"Oh, no you're not Vincent," Rory said, smiling. "You're not dead and neither is Kelli. In fact…no one is."
Vince and Kelli exchanged nervous glances, and as if on cue, they both simultaneously fainted and collapsed onto the ground.
Rory sighed. "Hmm…I should have expected that."
