Robert Bale is one of the wealthiest men in Marquette Cove. Not only a lawyer in town, he also has many clients outside of Wisconsin. He has lived in Marquette Cove for his entire life, and went to school with Michael Hanley. When they both returned from college, they fell in love with Felicia Bale. Felicia eventually married Robert, and this has caused a rift between Robert and Michael since.

When Vincent Moore, Robert's son's best friend, lost his father and his mother was sent into drug rehab, Robert became Vince's lawyer and fought to get Vince guardianship of his sister. As a result, Robert was named Vince and Akilah's legal guardian.

On the outs with Felicia over her relationship with Michael, Robert is actively pursuing an adulterous relationship with his law firm partner, Melissa Maddock. After learning the truth about Felicia being Michael's sister, Robert tried to mend fences with his wife, but she asked him for a divorce. After divorcing Felicia, Robert married Melissa so they could raise their child together. He did, however, continue his extra-martial affairs and soon saw his life spin out of control when his adult son Alec accused Robert of abusing him as a child. Robert eventually discovered that Aaron Maddock was the one responsible for molesting his son, but the damage to his reputation was already done.
